Description
“William O’ Clarkii” the cutthroat trout was named in honor of the explorer William Clark. The species name is Onchorhynchus clarkii. This painting highlights the distinctive coloration of a cutthroat trout and the cool clear water it requires for its survival. The cutthroat is an indicator of water purity as the species needs a habitat with clear, well-oxygenated water with gravel bottoms to spawn. Various subspecies of the cutthroat trout are the official state fish for seven western states, including the west slope cutthroat trout for the Montana state fish.
