Napili Bay during covid-19 was completely empty. This popular beach is close to where I live. It felt strange and lonely during the island and state shut down. Being the only person on the beach and seeing only my foot prints in the sand was a humbling experience. One I hope I won't have to repeat. Everything was closed including the Sea House Restaurant, one of our favorites.
Most of my landscape paintings don't have people in them, just like this one. However, all my reference photos usually do, I simply don't add them in to my paintings. It was a rare opportunity to capture reference photos of my favorite beaches with no people on them. This made it so much easier to capture the mood of the scene.

About Darice Machel McGuire

Darice Machel McGuire lived on the beautiful Island of Maui from 2012 until the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023, destroyed her art studio. She and her husband have relocated to Grass Valley, California. They purchased a commercial building to reestablish their art studios. McGuire's Hawaii and California landscape oil and acrylic paintings are gracing the homes and offices of collectors nationally and internationally. McGuire's choice of subject matter comes from her love of nature and all that surrounds her on a daily basis. She paints in large and small formats.
