Artist's Description
This colorful underwater scene of two playful sea turtles is three dimensional. I created this painting using sand mixed with gesso. The process is time consuming and challenging. I start by drawing my subject. Then I mix sand with gesso until I get the consistency. I then layer this mix onto the canvas where I want it to be three dimensional. I have to let this dry for at least 24 hours. Once it's dry I sand it and add another layer of just gesso, again I let this dry. I repeat the layering and sanding until I get the smoothness I'm looking for. This stage can take a week to complete, sometimes more. When everything is dry it's then time to paint.
