Maui’s most active eruption has nothing to do with lava. It’s a forceful explosion of seawater that erupts on a regular basis—often as frequently as every few minutes when the surf and wind are both up. Nakalele Blowhole is a natural geyser where seawater trapped in an underwater lava tube is searching for a way to escape. Despite the geyser’s beauty it’s important to remember the blowhole is dangerous and accidents frequently happen.
My oil painting does not show the geyser erupting. I chose to paint what it looks like after the eruption. It also shows large wave crashing on the lava rocks behind the geyser. The waves and geyser creates lots of tiny waterfalls.
