Artist's Description
This painting came about from my research for a group painting my art students were doing for a special project. I had assigned eight students to paint koi fish in any style, composition and colors on a canvas I divided into eight 24 x 14 sections. One of the students chose to not participate, leaving me to fill the space. I started out by painting an underpainting of cadmium red. Starting with the dark shadows, I worked my way around the rocks. I used thin transparent paint for the rocks and blended the light and dark values until I achieved the look I was going for. Before I painted the fish in I got a lot of jokes about the rocks. "Are those eggs you're painting?" was a common one. Once I painted the koi in the egg jokes stopped. Placing the shadows of the fish slightly to the right and smaller then the fish helped me give this painting a greater sense of depth. Adding the third fish in the upper right corner of the painting brought a better balance to the composition.

Darice Machel McGuire lived on the beautiful Island of Maui from 2012 until the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023, destroyed her art studio. She and her husband have relocated to Grass Valley, California. They purchased a commercial building to reestablish their art studios. McGuire's Hawaii and California landscape oil and acrylic paintings are gracing the homes and offices of collectors nationally and internationally. McGuire's choice of subject matter comes from her love of nature and all that surrounds her on a daily basis. She paints in large and small formats.
