During the winter months of December through April, the leeward waters of Maui County has the world's densest humpback whale population. Every year, over 10,000 humpbacks annually migrate to the warm, shallow waters and create thunderous splashes and aerial performances not seen in other species of whales. They love Maui. Who can blame ’em?! Actually, whales particularly love Auau Channel, the shallow area between West Maui, Lana’i and Moloka’i, one of the most popular breeding grounds in Hawaii. They don’t eat the entire time they’re in Hawaii. They eat an average of 1 to 1 and a half tons of food per day while in Alaska before their migration.They survive off a thick layer of blubber until they return to Alaskan waters, where huge masses of ultimately doomed plankton, krill and small fish await their demise. They mate and give birth while in Hawaii. Humpbacks have live births. Their pregnancy cycle lasts for about year. Once born, calves drink about 50 gallons of milk per...

Darice Machel McGuire

Darice Machel McGuire lived on the beautiful Island of Maui from 2012 until the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023, destroyed her art studio. She and her husband have relocated to Grass Valley, California. They purchased a commercial building to reestablish their art studios. McGuire's Hawaii and California landscape oil and acrylic paintings are gracing the homes and offices of collectors nationally and internationally. McGuire's choice of subject matter comes from her love of nature and all that surrounds her on a daily basis. She paints in large and small formats.
