Artist's Description
Pueo is a native Hawaiian short eared owl. It's also one of more famous of the various ʻaumākua (ancestor spirits) in Hawaiian culture. Their inhabit is the forests and grasslands throughout the islands of Hawaiʻi. Their numbers have been declining, particularly in the last two decades.
In Hawaii, from before the arrival of the first Polynesians, flies the short-eared brown owl, also named Hawaiian owl, or pueo. Like everywhere else, Hawaii gave the owl a special place in its mythology and it's legacy reaches far beyond brown feathers into the realm of the spirit world.
My wonderful aunt passed away in Jan 2018. She loved owls and collected many things with it'd image. Every time I see an owl it reminds me of her. So I dedicate this painting to her memory. May she fly happily with her owl friends in the spirit world.
The background of this painting was done with the acrylic pour technique. The rich green and yellow colors were perfect for the subject.
