Description
This scene is of the Auburn foothills in Auburn California. It's early morning. The sun is just beginning to warm the earth and chase away the mist.
The day I painted "Misty Hills" was a rare relaxing day for me. I had pre-stretched the canvas weeks before knowing what I was going to paint on it. I knew I wanted something different and special for this canvas and spent a lot of time gazing at it. Staring at a blank canvas can cause many artists great stress but not me. A blank canvas is like a "clean slate" begging to be filled. In the time between teaching, working and updating all my internet connections I went through 100's of photos, searching for just the right image. When I came across my image of the Auburn ravine. I knew "it" was the one.
After sketching in the hills and choosing my colors, my friend Phyllis came into my studio and asked if she could work on her painting and promised she wouldn't interrupt me. We chatted a bit while getting her set up then I went back to painting. Allowing myself to relax I soon found that wonderful meditative place in my mind. I lost track of time and had forgotten she was there until three hours had passed. At which time she exclaimed "OH MY GOD! That painting is amazing! " I stepped back to view my work, it was nearly done. Happy with my progress and the effect it had on Phyllis, I went back to painting. Phyllis stopped working on her painting and watched me finish mine. When I was satisfied it was done I signed my name and stood back. We gazed at it together for quite sometime, both lost in our thoughts.
When we finally spoke it was Phyllis saying " Watching you paint was the most inspiring thing I've ever seen. Your painting is amazing!" It felt wonderful to hear such validation from a friend. She pulled me out of my meditative state and back into the "real" world enough for me to respond. We talked about what to name it, nothing seemed right. "Auburn Ravine" or "Auburn Hills" just didn't sound right. "Misty Hills" came from my partner. As soon as he said it I knew that was the title.
"Misty Hills" captured my full attention. Pulling me into it from the first brush stroke to the last. It gives me a sense of mystery that goes on and on. I am so happy it effects others that way too.
