Artist's Description
Maui is seeing the end of an era as the sugar farming industry in Hawaii has come to an end. The last Hawaiian sugar plantation shut down at the end of 2016. The lush green sugar cane fields no longer greet island visitors as they arrive on airplanes. Which is the scene you see here in my painting. Alexander & Baldwin 36,000-acre plantation will take on a whole new look. It will take a few years of planning and evaluating several categories of potential replacement crops, which will include energy crops, agroforestry, grass-finished livestock operations, diversified food crops, and orchard crops.
Having the opportunity to paint this scene was quite an honor and education for me.

McGuire's choice of subject matter comes from her love of nature and all that surrounds her on a daily basis. She paints in large and small formats. Three of the five galleries that represented her work were destroyed by the Lahaina fire. The two remaining galleries are Karen Lei's Gallery in Kahakuloa and Karen Lei's...
