Makuwahine Aloha means Mother's love in Hawaiian. This mother humpback whale is teaching her baby all she needs to know for the long journey to Alaska. Humpbacks come to the Hawaiian islands to breed and give birth every winter. While they are here the adult whales don't eat. Humpback whales feed during the summer in the northern waters of Alaska. Hawai‘i is the only state in the United States where humpback whales mate, calve, and nurse their young. Humpbacks find Hawai‘i suitable because of the warm waters, the underwater visibility, the variety of ocean depths, and the lack of natural predators. The background of this painting I did using the acrylic pouring technique. The movement of the colors and the bubbles are perfect for painting marine life.
