This painting came about from my research for a group painting my art students were doing for a special project. I had assigned eight students to paint koi fish in any style, composition and colors on a canvas I divided into eight 24 x 14 sections. One of the students chose to not participate, leaving me to fill the space. I started out by painting an underpainting of cadmium red. Before I painted the fish in I got a lot of jokes about the rocks. "Are those eggs you're painting?" was a common one. Once I painted the koi in the egg jokes stopped. Adding the third fish in the upper right corner of the painting brought a better balance to the composition.
