Jellyfish have drifted along on ocean currents for millions of years, even before dinosaurs lived on the Earth. The jellylike creatures pulse along on ocean currents and are abundant in cold and warm ocean water, in deep water, and along coastlines. The most common type of jellyfish in Hawaii is the Carybdea alata and Carybdea rastonii, also known as box jellyfish. Seeing these beautiful translucent creatures you wouldn't think they'd be dangerous, Hawaii's three species of box jellies are the most hazardous to beachgoers.Their tentacles are lined with stinging cells used to capture prey. Each cell fires a toxin-dosed barb that can penetrate the skin, which causes the singing sensation.
But don't worry about my little beauties, they wouldn't hurt a fly. They are happy to swim in their world, looking beautiful.
NOTE; This painting, along with my entire inventory and art studio, was destroyed in the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023.
