This scenic national park is known as the “house of the sun” Haleakala. Towering over the island of Maui and visible from just about any point, Haleakalā Crater is a force of nature in every sense. The elevation is 10,023 feet above sea level, this dormant volcano is the stage for a breathtaking range of landscapes—and skyscapes. Many visitors wake up early to drive to the Haleakalā Visitor Center, the best spot to watch what may be the most spectacular sunrise on earth. Mark Twain described it as “the most sublime spectacle I have ever witnessed.”
Hawaiian legend says that the demigod Maui lassoed the sun from its journey across the sky as he stood on the volcano’s summit, slowing its descent to make the day last longer.
We visit Haleakala at least twice a year, some times more if it's really hot out. Escaping to the high peaks of this beautiful National Park helps to cool us down.

Darice Machel McGuire lived on the beautiful Island of Maui from 2012 until the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023, destroyed her art studio. She and her husband have relocated to Grass Valley, California. They purchased a commercial building to reestablish their art studios. McGuire's Hawaii and California landscape oil and acrylic paintings are gracing the homes and offices of collectors nationally and internationally. McGuire's choice of subject matter comes from her love of nature and all that surrounds her on a daily basis. She paints in large and small formats.
