Artist's Description

The Hawaiian sea turtle is the symbol of wisdom and good luck. I guess that's why I do a lot of paintings of them. I can use all the good luck and wisdom I can get.

This painting is a little different than my other honu paintings. I layered the entire background with various textures using sea sponge, bubble wrap and netting. Once I was satisfied with the results I painted the honu on top of it. I think the combination of the abstract background with the realistic turtle works well with this piece. He looks happy and relaxed, floating in the deep blue sea.

McGuire's choice of subject matter comes from her love of nature and all that surrounds her on a daily basis. She paints in large and small formats. Three of the five galleries that represented her work were destroyed by the Lahaina fire. The two remaining galleries are Karen Lei's Gallery in Kahakuloa and Karen Lei's...
