The Hawaiian sea turtle is the symbol of wisdom and good luck. I guess that's why I do a lot of paintings of them. I can use all the good luck and wisdom I can get.
This painting is a little different than my other honu paintings. I layered the entire background with various textures using sea sponge, bubble wrap and netting. Once I was satisfied with the results I painted the honu on top of it. I think the combination of the abstract background with the realistic turtle works well with this piece. He looks happy and relaxed, floating in the deep blue sea.

Darice Machel McGuire lived on the beautiful Island of Maui from 2012 until the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023, destroyed her art studio. She and her husband have relocated to Grass Valley, California. They purchased a commercial building to reestablish their art studios.
