This sweet young baby honu is coming out of her shell. Her first day of life is full of adventure and danger. Once she has escaped her shell, she must run to the sea or risk being eaten by sea birds.
The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, known as “Honu,” symbolizes good luck, endurance and long life. Turtles can show up as a person's guardian spirit, known as “Aumakua.” When lost, turtles are excellent navigators and often find their way home. They nest every 2-4 years and can lay as many as 7 nests. Nesting occurs from June till October. They will hatch anywhere between 48-70 days after they are laid.
The gentle reptiles are known for their ability to gracefully glide through the ocean with their paddle-like flippers and are often spotted feasting on algae close to shore while occasionally bobbing their heads up for air. Darice Machel McGuire lived on the beautiful Island of Maui from 2012 until the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023, destroyed her art studio. She and her husband have relocated to Grass Valley, California. They purchased a commercial building to reestablish their art studios. McGuire's Hawaii and California landscape oil and acrylic paintings are gracing the homes and offices of collectors nationally and internationally. McGuire's choice of subject matter comes from her love of nature and all that surrounds her on a daily basis. She paints in large and small formats.
