This honu, sea turtle, is taking a nap on the beach. Here in Maui Hawaii there are lots of beaches where these gentle creatures come to rest. On land they may be slow but in the ocean they are graceful and powerful.
My acrylic painting has a 3D look, created by the strong values of dark and light colors I used. I began with the background. Covering the entire canvas with burnt sienna. Then I used varying shades of dark and light paint to spatter all over the canvas. Since I wanted the feeling of a sunny beach I used more light spatters then the dark. After the background dried I sketched in the turtle then went over my sketch with a dark paint mix of phthalo blue and burnt umber. My focus for this painting was to show the sunlight on the turtles head. The contrast between the light of his head and the shadows under him really helped to achieve this goal.

Darice Machel McGuire lived on the beautiful Island of Maui from 2012 until the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023, destroyed her art studio. She and her husband have relocated to Grass Valley, California. They purchased a commercial building to reestablish their art studios. McGuire's Hawaii and California landscape oil and acrylic paintings are gracing the homes and offices of collectors nationally and internationally. McGuire's choice of subject matter comes from her love of nature and all that surrounds her on a daily basis. She paints in large and small formats.
