Hawaii is my favorite place in the world. I love the smell, colors, warmth and aloha spirit. This old boat was photographed by my mother many many years ago. It just begged for me to put it into a painting. What I loved about this fishing boat was it's old weathered look. I used an underpainting of cadmium red light to give the painting color balance. The palm trees added the feel of a tropical island. The name of the boat, Hilo Kale is named for one of my favorite towns and my favorite man, Charlie. Kale is Charlie in Hawaiian.
