Description
The texture I used for this painting is sand mixed with acrylic gesso. ( Gesso is a primer that creates a barrier between canvas and paint.) The look I was going for was that of a stucco wall. The image of the man was part of a mural in Chico California. The mural was of three bicyclist but it had been decaying for years. I joined with a small group of artists doing a show at the Chico State University in 2008. The show was called "Apropos Appropriation" and was the brain child of my good friend Marian Bronson. Her original plan was to find artists to create paintings from her close-up photographs of graffiti to create abstract paintings. But then she became interested in photographing our paintings, turning them into abstract photographs, which in turn became the inspiration for more paintings.
This is painting one of the triptych I did for the show. I took Marion's photographs of the decaying mural and recreated the scene in a more surrealistic manor.
This painting and it's two other parts are now the property of the MONCA, the Museum Of Northern California, in Chico California.
