The texture I used for this painting is sand mixed with acrylic gesso. ( Gesso is a primer that creates a barrier between canvas and paint.) The look I was going for was that of a stucco wall. The image of the man was part of a mural in Chico California. The mural was of three bicyclist but it had been decaying for years. I joined with a small group of artists doing a show at the Chico State University in 2008. The show was called "Apropos Appropriation" and was the brain child of my good friend Marian Bronson. Her original plan was to find artists to create paintings from her close-up photographs of graffiti to create abstract paintings. But then she became interested in photographing our paintings, turning them into abstract photographs, which in turn became the inspiration for more paintings.
This is painting two of the triptych I did for the show. I took Marion's photographs of the decaying mural and recreated the scene in a more surrealistic manor.

About Darice Machel McGuire
Darice Machel McGuire lived on the beautiful Island of Maui from 2012 until the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023, destroyed her art studio. She and her husband have relocated to Grass Valley, California. They purchased a commercial building to reestablish their art studios. McGuire's Hawaii and California landscape oil and acrylic paintings are gracing the homes and offices of collectors nationally and internationally. McGuire's choice of subject matter comes from her love of nature and all that surrounds her on a daily basis. She paints in large and small formats.
