Description
The cattle egret is extremely widespread since its introduction to Hawaiʻi from Florida in 1959. It was brought here to control insect pests. These birds are easy to spot, they are 20-inch long white birds and are often seen in large groups. Cattle Egret in flight glide effortlessly at relatively low speeds with just a few economical strokes of their large and powerful wings. During the breeding season, adults develop orange-buff plumes on the back, breast, and crown. The male is marginally larger and has slightly longer breeding plumes than the female.
I see these birds every day when driving into Lahaina. They tend to follow the maintenance crews who care for the landscape along the roads, as they cut grass, trim trees and bushes. This stirs up the bugs and gives the egrets an easy way to catch a meal.
My acrylic painting shows a cattle egret during the breeding season. Notice the buff color of his feathers?
NOTE; This painting, along with my entire inventory and art studio, was destroyed in the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023.
