Banyan Tree
Hope is a tree in the center of Lahaina Town. Standing as a testament to the strength of the Maui community, the Banyan Tree will once again nurture us with her shade, as she has done for the past 150 years.
This is my hope to see the Banyan tree flourish as depicted in my painting.
The Banyan Tree in Lahaina is a Maui landmark. It was planted in 1873 by Sheriff William Owen Smith in the courtyard of the Courthouse to memorialize the 50th anniversary of the first American Protestant mission in Lahaina. Its extensive trunk and aerial root system now covers 0.66 acres and has grown to the size of an entire city block. It stands over 60 feet high and provides a lot of shade for those hot Lahaina days. Every night at sunset thousands of birds come to roost in the branches for the night. The sound of so many birds can be deafening.

Darice Machel McGuire lived on the beautiful Island of Maui from 2012 until the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023, destroyed her art studio. McGuire's Hawaii and California landscape oil and acrylic paintings are gracing the homes and offices of collectors nationally and internationally. McGuire's choice of subject matter comes from her love of nature and all that surrounds her on a daily basis. She paints in large and small formats. Three of the five galleries that represented her work were destroyed by the Lahaina fire. The two remaining galleries are Karen Lei's Gallery in Kahakuloa and Karen Lei's...
