The Banyan Tree in Lahaina is a Maui landmark. It was planted in 1873 by Sheriff William Owen Smith in the courtyard of the Courthouse to memorialize the 50th anniversary of the first American Protestant mission in Lahaina. The banyan tree has become the largest banyan tree in Hawaii, and one of the largest in the United States. Its extensive trunk and aerial root system now covers 0.66 acres and has grown to the size of an entire city block. It stands over 60 feet high and provides a lot of shade for those hot Lahaina days. Every night at sunset thousands of birds come to roost in the branches for the night. The sound of so many birds can be deafening.
Painting the banyan tree has been on my to do list for quite some time. Before deciding on just the right angle I took many reference photos at different times of day. I finally settled on the composition you see here.
