Annie is my youngest oil painting student. I often take pictures of my students and their progress as they paint. This painting was inspired by one such photo. Annie's relaxed pose and big orange hat, pink dress and her favorite pink shoes reminds me of Strawberry Shortcake dolls from the 70's. In this image Annie is painting an oil painting with a palette knife. The hand in her lap was in a fist and never looked right to me, so I added a brush. I plan on painting more artists with big hats, working on paintings. There is something very relaxing about an artist deep in concentration.
Annie (the real person) now owns "Annie" the painting. It was my gift to her for all the love and fun we have shared as teacher and student.

McGuire's choice of subject matter comes from her love of nature and all that surrounds her on a daily basis. She paints in large and small formats. Three of the five galleries that represented her work were destroyed by the Lahaina fire. The two remaining galleries are Karen Lei's Gallery in Kahakuloa and Karen Lei's...
