The Sugar Cane Train is a tourist attraction on Maui that started in 1969. The train depot is located in Lahaina and is just two doors down from my art studio. You can take a historic journey from Lahaina to Ka'anapali Resort along a six mile stretch of tracks. The train crosses a 325-foot curved wooden trestle and offers panoramic views of neighboring islands and the West Maui Mountains.
Monday through Friday I hear the blast of its steam whistle as it takes people along its journey. There are three steam engines used in a rotating manner. The one in this painting is Engine number 3. I have photographed all three from many angles for varying compositions and details.
This was quite a challenging painting due to all the fine details of the steam engine and the vanishing points of the train cars. For the gray cement sidewalk I added a touch of color. She and her husband have relocated to Grass Valley, California. They purchased a commercial building to reestablish their art studios. McGuire's Hawaii and California landscape oil and acrylic paintings are gracing the homes and offices of collectors nationally and internationally.
