The Sugar Cane Train is a tourist attraction on Maui that started in 1969. The train depot is located in Lahaina and is just two doors down from my art studio. You can take a historic journey from Lahaina to Ka'anapali Resort along a six mile stretch of tracks. The train crosses a 325-foot curved wooden trestle and offers panoramic views of neighboring islands and the West Maui Mountains.
Monday through Friday I hear the blast of its steam whistle as it takes people along its journey. There are three steam engines used in a rotating manner. The one in this painting is Engine number 3. I have photographed all three from many angles for varying compositions and details.
This was quite a challenging painting due to all the fine details of the steam engine and the vanishing points of the train cars. For the gray cement sidewalk I added a touch of color. Darice Machel McGuire lived on the beautiful Island of Maui from 2012 until the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023, destroyed her art studio. She and her husband have relocated to Grass Valley, California. They purchased a commercial building to reestablish their art studios. McGuire's Hawaii and California landscape oil and acrylic paintings are gracing the homes and offices of collectors nationally and internationally. McGuire's choice of subject matter comes from her love of nature and all that surrounds her on a daily basis. She paints in large and small formats.
