Description
Two baby honu just hatched and are racing to the sea for their first swim. These cute little guys have a long tough life ahead of them. With an average of 90% hatching success and 1% survival rate up to sexual maturity, a one percent survival rate sounds pretty awful. No wonder so many eggs are required to maintain a stable population of these turtles. After laying her eggs the mother turtle's work is done, so young turtles must survive on their own. There are many obstacles for hatchlings in the open ocean. Sharks, big fish and circling birds all eat baby turtles, and they die after accidentally eating tar balls and plastic garbage. DO NOT touch baby sea turtles. Something about scrambling over the sand seems to be important in their "imprinting" so they know where to return to lay their eggs. Additionally, they are all endangered/threatened/protected so touching them is going to land you in legal trouble.
My painting represents the beginning of these young Honu's lives. I created it using the acrylic pour swiping technique. Once the paint was dry I added the turtles.
