Artist's Description

Kahakuloa Head is located in a very remote area in West Maui on the island's north shore near the village of Kahakuloa. The 636-foot hill is a scenic landmark. Not many people make it here because the only road that leads here, Kahekili Highway (Route 340) isn't really a “highway.” Many people consider it hazardous and one of the spookiest roads they have ever driven. The road hugs the sea cliffs and is very narrow (often just one lane), with many blind curves and no guard rails. So not many people visit this part of Maui.

King Kahekili was king on Maui in the mid-1700s. It is believed that Kahakuloa Head was one of King Kahekili's favorite cliff-diving spots. He climbed up this hill and leaped into the ocean below. That's why the hill is also known as Kahekili's Leap, hence the title of this painting.

I created this painting with a palette knife. It's part of my " Dancing With Waves" series. The original painting sold. Prints are available.

About Darice Machel McGuire

Darice Machel McGuire

Darice Machel McGuire lived on the beautiful Island of Maui from 2012 until the Lahaina fire on August 8th, 2023, destroyed her art studio. She and her husband have relocated to Grass Valley, California. They purchased a commercial building to reestablish their art studios. McGuire's Hawaii and California landscape oil and acrylic paintings are gracing the homes and offices of collectors nationally and internationally. McGuire's choice of subject matter comes from her love of nature and all that surrounds her on a daily basis. She paints in large and small formats. Three of the five galleries that represented her work were destroyed by the Lahaina fire. The two remaining galleries are Karen Lei's Gallery in Kahakuloa and Karen Lei's...
